Patient Requests for Private Referral

If you choose to see a specialist privately (either self-funding or using private insurance) we want to give you more information –

Your GP will provide a referral letter with clinical information about your medical problem, medical history and medications. The letter will usually be sent to one of the Grampian private medical providers.

If you have private medical insurance, you need to let your insurance company know about the referral and check they will cover the costs of the referral and everything needed from it (including consultation, investigations, treatment and follow-up). The insurance company may want to know which specialist you are being referred to – check with them what information they need.

The private specialist needs to do all investigations and treatments related to the your referral – we will not do tests or other investigations relating to that episode of private care at the practice. If the private consultation leads to you needing short term medication, these prescriptions should be provided by your private provider. If the consultation leads to a need for ongoing medication, this will be at the discretion of your GP and based on current local prescribing guidelines.
